New Kid on the Block

"Wow! Look at them go!" she thought. The kids in her new neighborhood were riding scooters. They were zipping up and down the street real fast! They looked like they were having a lot of fun.

Her Mom said, "The parents are all watching the kids ride. Why don't we both go out and introduce ourselves?"

"O.K." She said as she walked behind her Mom feeling shy.

"Hello!" Leah's mom said, "My name is Liz and this is Leah. We just moved in and wanted to say hi!"The adults started talking easily. Leah just shuffled her feet, pushing stones around on the street.

"Hi! I'm Will. I'm 5."

"I'm McKenna. My twin, Keely and I are 7."

"I'm Leah and I'm 6. You guys are really good on those scooters!"

"Thanks! Where's yours?" asked McKenna.

Leah answered, "I don't have one. I've never even tried one."

"Here, try mine." offered Keely.

Leah was a bit shaky at first but then she got the hang of it.

"Look Mom! I'm doing it!" she yelled as she raced past her.

When Leah returned the scooter to Keely, she said, "That was awesome! Thanks for sharing!"

"No problem! You did great!" said Keely, "We have to go but we'll see you tomorrow!"

At dinner that night, Leah asked if she could get a scooter. Her Mom told her she could if she had enough of her own money.

Leah counted all her money but didn't have quite enough. She asked her Mom if she could do extra chores to earn the rest of the money.

The next day Leah told her friends how she could get a scooter.

Then Leah went straight to work. She had to fix up her toy room. Then she had to take the empty boxes out to the garage. She had 3 boxes piled in her arms so she couldn't see the steps. Leah fell out the door!

Her Mom came running. Leah was crying as she held her arm. They raced to the doctor. When they got home, Leah had stitches in her arm with a huge bandage around it. Her friends were waiting.

"Wow, cool!" said Will looking at her arm.

Leah said, "Yeah, but I'm worried I won't be able to do my chores to get the scooter."

McKenna said, "How about we help you do your chores!"

"You guys would do that?" asked Leah.

Keely said, "Sure! We'd do anything for a friend!"

So, with help, she was able to earn enough money. She got a bright red scooter! Everyone couldn't wait for Leah's arm to heal so they could have races!

Leah decided to surprise her friends with a treat. She used the extra money she made doing chores to buy everyone ice cream!

Leah was happy to have a scooter but she was even happier to have made new friends.
