Graduation from school is a milestone celebrated by the entire family. Whether you have a kindergarten, high school or college graduate, here are some ideas to help you create a day to remember.

First things first! Before you can plan a spectacular party, you need to make some decisions:

1. What is your budget?

Be realistic about how much money you can spend on the party. You don't have to go overboard to create a memorable party for your graduate.

2. Who will be invited?

Will you invite just immediate family or all of your and your graduate's friends? What about people from church, sports teams, the neighborhood. Your budget will guide you in how large (or small) your party should be.

3. Where will you hold the party?

Since graduations are usually held in the spring or early summer, outdoor parties are very popular. If you plan an outdoor event, make sure you have a plan if the weather doesn't cooperate. You could rent a tent or have an indoor alternative. Make a budget

4. When will you hold the party?

Will you hold the party right after the graduation ceremony or plan it for a different day. High School graduation parties will most likely compete with other classmates' events. You may want to consult with your child's friends to see what they are planning so you don't overlap too much.

5. What kind of party will you have?

Will you plan your party around a special theme or go with a traditional graduation atmosphere? Will you have a formal affair or a casual open house type event?

Once you have made these decisions, you can begin the planning process. If you're just too busy or stressed out to deal with all of the details, consider hiring an event planner to help make your party special. Here are some of our favorite graduation party themes:

Superstar!

Show your graduate's star quality with a homemade DVD movie invitation. Many computer programs have video editing software that is easy to use, or you can download very affordable programs from the Internet, such as Microsoft Windows Movie Magic. Print the party information on the DVD paper insert and customize the cover with a photo of your "superstar".

Select one or a few favorite pictures of your graduate and have them blown up as posters. Local photo shops or Kinko's can do this for you. Set up a DVD player and play a movie of highlights from your graduate's life. Consider renting a karaoke machine and let all the guests be superstars!

Make liberal use of stars and movie memorabilia for your décor. You can set up a photo "booth" by creating a backdrop with school banners and a life-size poster of the grad and providing a digital camera (or enlist the help of a friend to be the photographer) Guests can pose "with" the graduate. The pictures can be put into a great memory book for the grad.

Sporty Grad

Invite guests by sending a custom printed T-shirt with the grad's team number or nickname. Include a traditional invitation along with the shirt and request that guests wear the shirt to the party. Use sports-themed decorations in the school colors and proudly display photos or run a DVD showing highlights of your grad's sports "career".

Visit www.greatbigstuff.com and purchase a giant baseball bat, soccer ball, football or other sport item and have all of the guests autograph the item with good wishes for the graduate.

The Scholar

Was your grad more into books than sports? What would be more fitting than a diploma style invitation? Print the party information on blank certificate paper (you can find certificate paper at any office supply store). Roll up the paper and keep it closed with a tassel and diploma charm accent (find these at party supply stores). Send the invitation in a cardboard mailing tube.

Decorate with the traditional mortarboards and diplomas and be sure to display all of your grad's awards and achievements. Make a blow-up of the grad's college acceptance letter and mount it in a wide mat. Ask guests to write their good wishes on the mat then frame it and present it to the grad.

The Survivor

For the student whose school life may have been challenging, send an invitation with an island theme based on "The Survivor" TV program. A luau is an ideal party for this kind of party. Invite your guests to come dressed in fun, tropical clothing, play Jimmy Buffet and other beach music. Greet each guest with a traditional Hawaiian lei and serve picnic food.

How PERFECT is that?
