Trends in Décor: Texture Decorating with texture is hot!

The American Heritage internet dictionary describes texture as, "The distinctive physical composition or structure of something especially with respect to the size shape, and arrangement of its parts: the texture of sandy soil; the texture of cooked fish."

Texture is also referred to as "the quality given to a piece of art, literature, or music by the interrelationship of its elements."

Implementing the interrelationship of texture in your home is easy!

Fabrics are beautiful in every room. The fabrics chosen for furniture, floors, windows treatments, accessories and even walls can set the style, the mood, the feel of a home. Robin egg blue, browns (especially chocolate brown), greens, and golds are colors of nature. A "green" palette with natural textures is in style. Integrating silks, linens, sheers, cottons, and other fabrics in your favorite colors adds texture to your rooms.

Color and pattern add texture. Cool colors, warm colors, dark colors and light colors make a room appear larger or smaller, warmer or cooler. Colors interwoven add texture within a natural surface. A brown woven wood laced with a cool gray grass can appear thicker and richer. The cool gray within the brown weave adds depth and dimension.

Complement with texture. Thick heavy fabrics are generally thought of for upholstery. Consider heavy fabrics for some of the richest drapes, pillows, tablecloths, napkins, slipcovers and more. Chenille and velvet are classic heavy fabrics that add texture and softness. Sheers, satins, and chintzes are smooth, soft, airy fabrics that seem to flow and may appear glazed. Chenille blended with other fabrics, even sheer fabrics, is very trendy.

Think of texture as a natural quality. Layer textural elements in a room and you add beauty while enhancing all your surroundings, just as Mother Nature does outside.
