It's almost here. The weather is slowly warming and the kids are getting antsy. Before you know it, it will be summer. We all look forward to it! We can kick back and relax. The kids are out of school. Cook outs, beach days and… wait! The kids will be out of school!!! And unless you make your plans now, the call of "there's nothing to do; we're bored" will be heard throughout your house.

We all look forward to a break in the action but summer is also a great time for kids to experience the excitement of focused activities especially in the areas of the arts, sports, and new interests your kids may have regarding a new hobby or interest like cooking, photography, horses, etc. Summer camps and classes in your child's area of interest are a great enrichment opportunity. Because of the concentrated time frame, summer programs usually include options that are not available in the regular school-year.

Summer camp is a wonderful way to discover new interests through a wide range of experiences. With dance camp, for instance, movement, music and imagination are front and center for the youngest students while cultural adventures or a Broadway style experience awaits students in other age ranges. And what young girl doesn't dream of being a princess? It's not unusual to find a group of friends all attending these classes together.

There are unique camps literally to fit most interests in our area including princess camps, language camps, theatre camps, jewelry-making camps, church camps, astronomy camps, archeological camps, and so on. So many opportunities are available in our own community so if your child is not ready to go far away to camp for a few weeks, there are many local camps that offer daily sessions and no overnight stays.

Students can expand their knowledge through these exciting classes and camps designed to make learning fun with no previous experience required. Many of the camps even provide the campers with the opportunity to showcase what they learned for parents and friends at the end of the experience.

So be prepared with enrichment activities this summer. Now is the time to enroll and make sure that instead of hearing "there's nothing to do", you hear "Mom, look what we did today!"

Happy summer.
